Sewage backup cleanup is Category 3 work, the worst water there is. It carries bacteria and viruses, and anything porous it soaks into gets thrown out. Carpet, pad, upholstered furniture, drywall and insulation that sewage touched are not cleaned and kept. That is how the whole restoration trade handles it, not us being overly cautious.
Most Orem sewage backups come up through a basement floor drain or a lower-level toilet or shower. Common causes are tree roots in an older clay or cast iron sewer lateral, grease buildup and flushed wipes. If water keeps rising from the drain, stop running water upstairs. Every flush and every load of laundry adds to it.
Our crew wears proper protective gear and sets up to keep contamination from spreading through the house. We extract the sewage, remove affected porous materials and flood cut drywall above the water line. Hard surfaces like concrete, tile and framing get cleaned with detergent, then disinfected with a registered disinfectant. After structural drying, we treat the space for odor so it does not smell like a sewer when the furnace kicks on.
You will need a plumber or drain company to clear the line, often with a camera inspection to find the root intrusion or sag in the pipe. We work alongside them. Do not try to clean sewage with a shop vac and bleach. Call (385) 853-1062 right away. If the smell hangs around after an old cleanup, see odor and smoke removal.
