Black mold removal is a job for containment, not bleach. The mold people call black mold is usually Stachybotrys chartarum, a slow-growing species that needs material wet for a week or more. It feeds on the paper face of drywall, cardboard and wood that stays soaked. That is why we find it in Orem basements after a water heater leak that sat unnoticed, or behind a shower wall where a cracked grout line fed water into the cavity for months.
Bleach does not fix it. On porous drywall the water in household bleach soaks in while the chlorine stays on the surface, and the growth underneath is left alone. Our crew removes the material instead. We build a sealed work area with 6-mil poly, run a HEPA air scrubber under negative pressure, cut the drywall about two feet past visible growth and bag it inside the containment. Studs get HEPA vacuumed and cleaned, and stained wood gets sanded or sealed with an encapsulant once it tests dry.
Plenty of dark mold is not Stachybotrys at all. Cladosporium and Aspergillus can look just as black on a bathroom ceiling. Color does not tell you the species. To find out what you have before work starts, book mold testing and inspection. For smaller patches, our general mold removal page covers the process.
Black mold removal in Orem ends with a clearance check: dry readings, clean surfaces and no musty smell. Call (385) 853-1062 to schedule a look.
